Did we engage with residents who live local to the park? What were the results?

Earlier this year Councillor Jackson went out to community with a proposal to establish a local dog off-leash area. The parklands area in Berrinba was identified as a possible location. We engaged with residents via Council’s Have Your Say platform. A survey was conducted and open for feedback over a two-week period

We engaged with residents who live locally, and most residents support the idea. 60 per cent of survey submissions were from residents who live in Berrinba and as per survey results, 70 per cent support a dog off-leash area.

    Positive feedback received included:

    ‘There isn't anything I'd change. I think it’s a good plan.’

I don’t own a dog, but happy to support the community with having a place to play with their best mate.

Creating a designated space for dogs would not only contribute to the physical and mental wellbeing of both pets and their owners but also foster a greater sense of community.’

Can we use Demeio Park instead of Bush Tucker Drive?

While this may seem like a suitable option, creating a dog off-leash area in Demeio park could cause issues with current park user groups. Demeio Park is currently an open space that the local community enjoy for play. Space is limited as it’s close to other park facilities used by families and young children.

There are a variety of environmental overlays on this park which can limit the type of activities and infrastructure allowed in this park.

Also, Council does not own the grassed lot adjacent to Demeio Park.

There are too many properties that Bush Tucker Road backs onto. Won’t this have an impact on the residents?

Councillor Jackson and Council understand that some residents may have concerns about potential negative impacts. However, community safety is a top priority. To minimise this, safety signs will be installed, and park rangers will keep an eye out for any issues.

The survey did identify some concerns about the safety of families using the Bush Tucker Drive Park if a dog off-leash area was created. When choosing a location for any dog off-leash area, Council ensures it is far from the nearest playground.

As with all dog off-leash areas, it is fenced to keep dogs contained. It's also a legal requirement for dogs to always be on a lead outside the fenced area, and we trust dog owners will follow this rule.
